I have been thinking lots lately, maybe it’s the whole New Years thing. Ok, I am not gonna lie it is the New Year, the fresh start. This year however instead of feel revived and ready to take the world by storm, I feel a tad bit blah.
A tad bit exhausted and honestly I feel like running to bed, bath and beyond grabbing the 1st towel I can find and THROWING it in.
When I feel this way I think to my self, why am I feeling so {insert feeling here}? I have a success senior portrait business, I love Get Schooled Photo and all it has become and all the plans we have for 2012! I am blessed and I am thankful. Let’s be honest though, creative professions are hard, they are competitive. The non stop competition brings on the ugly act of comparing yourself.
Comparisons are murdering your productivity!
Making a comparison typically doesn’t make you feel good, we all get online, we see work that others are creating and we instantly think they are better then us, that it comes to them so easy. What we don’t realize is by doing that, by comparing ourselves to others we are crippling our own growth, our own creativity. We are pouring cement on our feet and murdering our productivity.
We all fall into that pit of – I AM NOT WORTHY, I AM NOT GOOD ENOUGH! I am here to tell you YOU ARE AWESOME! You are worthy!!!!!! I promise. Just recognize that when you are feeling those yucky feelings, it is more then likely you are making way too many comparisons to others.
You are subconsciously competing with people who aren’t even your competition!
Let that sink in just a bit.
Are you promoting within your self healthy competition or are you competing/comparing your self to the photographer that lives 2,567 miles from you? That is unhealthy and totally unproductive. If you want to compare and compete, do that within your own market. Look at what your direct competitor is presenting to your community and see how you can do different, do better, be unique. Of course I don’t want you to be ugly to your local photographers but you know what I mean. Find your voice in your local community, not in the big ol’ internet community.
Do you find yourself comparing yourself to others? How does it make you feel?
Here is another amazing, encouraging post from Mary of Justin & Mary Photography
It has spoken to me more then words can describe. I love this quote from the post :
Because like Justin always reminds me, SLOW GROWTH EQUALS STRONG ROOTS!
